About

As part of the Auckland Heritage Festival, the community parks team in partnership with The Pumphouse Theatre are hosting a guided tour of the historic pumphouse and surrounding park.

Begin your walk at the historic Pumphouse Theatre, originally built in 1905–1906 as a vital water pumping station that drew water from Lake Pupuke to supply Takapuna and neighbouring North Shore communities, its sturdy brick form and tall chimney a reminder of the infrastructure that supported early settlement. From there, we wander into Killarney Park, where the calm waters of Lake Pupuke reveal a much older story, formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. This crater lake is a striking remnant of Auckland’s volcanic field. Its deep freshwater basin and distinctive shape offer a powerful glimpse into the region’s geological past.

An average level of fitness and mobility required.
