About

A Pulitzer Prize finalist that’s drawn stars like Kathleen Turner, Christopher Reeve, Carol Burnett and Alan Alda to the two lead roles, Love Letters proves all great theatre really needs is two voices and a great script.

They met at a birthday party in 1937. He was seven. She was already, in his words, “a lost princess.” What follows is fifty years of letters. Love Letters tells the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner through the notes, cards and letters they write each other from childhood to old age. Thank-you notes turn into love letters. Christmas cards carry decades of longing between the lines. Two people who might have been perfect for each other keep circling one another, pulled together and pushed apart by family and ambition and everything else life throws in the way.

Andy is steady and dutiful, headed for the law and eventually the Senate. Melissa is wild and funny, an artist who never quite finds her footing. On paper, they tell each other everything. In person, it’s never quite that simple. This play asks a devastating question: what happens to the people we love when we only ever half let them in?

Performed with the two actors reading their letters aloud, Love Letters strips theatre back to its essentials: two voices, one long correspondence, and a lifetime of things almost said. Sharp and incredibly tender by the end, it’s a love story told entirely in the words we choose to put on paper, and everything we leave out.

“Love Letters” is presented by arrangement with Origin Theatrical on behalf of Broadway Licensing, a Concord Theatricals Company.
