About

50 years to the night since Roger Hall’s first play, Glide Time, took to the stage. We’re celebrating his incredible career with a special Q&A, tributes, and a chance to get a taster of what you’re in for with September’s anniversary season of Glide Time. Supper provided and cash bar available.

On 11 August 1976, a play about a small government office in Wellington opened at Circa Theatre and changed New Zealand theatre forever. Glide Time sold out so fast that the waiting list passed a thousand names. It transferred to a bigger venue to keep up with demand, toured the country, and went on to inspire Gliding On, the sitcom that became a Kiwi institution. Fifty years later, to the night, we’re celebrating the man who wrote it.

Sir Roger Hall is New Zealand’s most prolific and most performed playwright. In a career spanning five decades, he has written more than 40 plays, and Glide Time was the one that started it all, the play Sir Roger himself has called “the big break that allowed me to become a full-time writer.”

The honours have followed the work. Middle Age Spread transferred to London’s West End for a fifteen-month run and won the Comedy of the Year award from the Society of West End Theatres. Sir Roger holds an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Victoria University, a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement, and in 2019, a knighthood: Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to theatre.

Half a century on, the office workers of Glide Time are returning to the stage, and we’re marking the occasion the only way that felt right: an evening built entirely around the man who gave them to us.

Join us on 11 August, exactly fifty years since the curtain first rose, to celebrate the playwright who has spent half a century holding up a mirror to New Zealanders and giving us permission to laugh at what we saw.
