About

The 1990 Pulitzer Prize nominated play Love Letters explores the bittersweet relationship of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, a dutiful lawyer/politician, and Melissa Gardner, a free-spirited artist, which spans over fifty years of soaring victories and crushing defeats as told solely through the letters, notes and cards they wrote to each other.

This is a story about a boy and girl who are forever linked in mind, heart, and spirit. Life conspires to keep them apart; love inspires their journey together.

In his critically acclaimed plays, A.R. Gurney has wittily captured the manners of upper-middle-class WASP America, but never as gracefully or with such dazzling economy as in Love Letters. In an era of e-mails, Love Letters reminds audiences of the intimacy of correspondence as it traces the relationship of the impetuous, lively, but unstable Melissa with the staid, no-nonsense, play-by-the-rules Andy.

A smash hit both off and on Broadway, Love Letters captures Andy and Melissa and the changing world they live in with a fullness of detail that only Gurney can command.
