About
Michael Palin’s wickedly funny look at the thing we all dread: unwanted guests.
Stephen Febble has it made. Retired, comfortable, settled into a rhythm of newspapers, radishes and long afternoon naps. Then his wife Virginia drops the bombshell: daughter Diana, her hapless husband Alan, teenage granddaughter Charlotte and her incontinent dog Pippa are coming to stay. The whole weekend.
What follows is domestic warfare fought over Scrabble tiles, cheese straws and whose fault it is the dog’s struck again. A dinner party spirals out of control when the mystery guest turns out to be a chiropodist with strong views on nudity and a stash of “herbal” cigarettes.
Old grudges and a few home truths come out along with the good scotch, and Stephen’s carefully maintained grumpiness starts to crack into something more painful, and funnier, than anyone bargained for. Palin proves he can do more than silly walks, under the one-liners and the beautifully observed bickering sits a story about a man terrified of being loved, and even more terrified of admitting it.
If you’ve ever survived a weekend with the in-laws, brought a dog somewhere it wasn’t wanted, or made up a Scrabble word on the spot… or just want to see the chaos of all these things unfolding, this one’s for you.
