About
This is an introductory workshop for those interested in learning Lighting and Sound in amateur theatre, but could be applied to professional work, including film and setting up music concerts etc.It will consist of a mixture of theory and hands-on experience.
It will provide the solid basics of theatre tech, which can then be then expanded upon by helping in amateur theatre, school etc. Also later in the year, we will be running some Intermediate courses on Sound Editing and using Light Factory, and also advanced courses on Lighting and Sound design.
Course Overview
Theory:
- The different types of lights, and what they’re used for (including LED and moving lights, strobes, UVs and smoke machines)
- Introduction to a Mac 250 moving light (thanks to Kenderdine Electrical for lending this to us)
- Lighting dimmers
- Patching dimmer channels- physical plugs and soft patching
- Controlling dimmers- DMX, lighting boards and introduction to Light Factory a lighting cue program
- Basic lighting rig design
- The different types of cables and plugs.
- Speakers- main speakers, sub-woofers and monitors, (passive and active)
- Playing sound effects from a CD player or laptop (with Winamp or a cue program)
- Sound mixing board
- Cross-Over amp for sub-woofer
- Microphones (hand-held and wireless)
Hands-On work:
- Rigging lights (including LEDs)
- Gelling lights to get different colours
- Focussing lights on stage
- Putting light levels up and down, and programming in a scene with a lighting board
- Plugging in speakers
- Running, securing and coiling cables
- Playing sound samples from a Laptop, and setting levels on a sound mixer
- House, Safety, Emergency and Backstage Lights, Extractor Fans/Air Conditioning, Heaters, Backstage Audio Monitors
- RTs (Walkie-Talkies), and Pumphouse comms system

- General safety- overview of WorkSafe rules
- Rigging from the catwalk in a harness- overview of WorkSafe courses

Tutors
Anton Reinauer- Tech Manager of ShoreSide Theatre and Peninsula Players- has 11 years of lighting and sound experience in amateur theatre- and has extensive lighting and sound design experience.
Mark Pummell- Has been involved in theatre (both performance and technical theatre) from the age of 8. Studied music practice at college, and has a degree in Music Technology. His work experience is in TV, Theatre and Film. Currently he’s the audio visual technician at Northcote College.
Julia Rutherford- Has been doing tech in high school and outside amateur shows since she was 15. She has a BA in Design for Theatre and TV, and has done the lighting design for Shakespeare in the Park for the last three years (and was Tech Manager for the last two). Her most recent show was Not About Heroes where she designed the lighting and sound. She currently works in the Theatre Tech hire department at Kenderdine Electrical.
Duncan Milne- Has been involved with lighting and sound design and operation for more than 30 years. He has lit and operated more than 20 plays for Titirangi Theatre and other local theatres, and used to run the sound desk for 80s haircut band Katango. He currently is working full time as a Theatre Tech.
